MURRAY, Ky. – Murray State University’s College of Education and Human Services honored educator Dr. Robert Lyons at its annual Homecoming Breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 19.

Lyons is this year’s recipient of the college’s Outstanding Alumnus Service Award, recognizing his profound impact on both the college and its students.

Retiring in 2020, Lyons was an educator for 30 years, beginning his career in high school before transitioning to higher education.

He expressed his surprise and gratitude for receiving the award.

“I wasn’t expecting anything like this,” Lyons said. “I’m happy to be part of it because it means a lot.”

Lyons held various positions within the College of Education and Human Services, including assistant professor, associate professor, chair of the Educational Studies, Leadership and Counseling department and assistant dean.

His desire to educate stems from his parents, both teachers.

“They encouraged it because they felt like it was meaningful, and then you can contribute more to people,” Lyons said.

Dr. David Whaley, dean of the College of Education and Human Services, commended Lyons for enhancing the quality and success of the college’s programs.

“He is an expert in his discipline, attracting students and modeling the best in teaching, research, service and administration,” Whaley said. “I found Dr. Lyons to be a committed servant leader in all that he does. He and his family have been very generous in continuing their family scholarship. Dr. Lyons left an outstanding legacy during his 20 years of service to Murray State University.”

Reflecting on his career, Lyons emphasized the importance of relationships in education.

“The relationships—that's what you remember,” he said. “You don't ever remember program details, but you do remember the relationships with the people.”

The College of Education and Human Services takes immense pride in honoring Dr. Robert Lyons for his contributions to the field of education.
