Nonprofit Resource Center to host 2nd annual Philanthropy Week

MURRAY, Ky. — Murray State University’s Nonprofit Resource Center will host its 2nd annual Philanthropy Week April 18–22. The week consists of a celebration of generosity in the Murray-Calloway County area, recognizing successful approaches to giving of time, talent and treasures that help make this a wonderful community to live and thrive. Philanthropy Week recognizes and advances the historic partnership among the public, nonprofit and business sectors in the community.

Monday, April 18 at 6 p.m.
"A Conversation on Philanthropy and Giving at Murray State University”
Murray State President, Dr. Bob Jackson
Nonprofit Leadership Studies (NLS) faculty member Mike Gowen talks to President Jackson about the history and current trajectory of philanthropy and giving at Murray State University. This conversation may be viewed at .

Tuesday, April 19 at 6 p.m.
"Everyone Can Be a Philanthropist"
Murray State University NLS students Sarah Labitzke of Evansville, Indiana, Zach McCarver of Jackson, Tennessee, Alissa Peal of Kingsport, Tennessee and Hadley Stephens of Metropolis, Illinois will deliver this presentation. It will introduce the audience to philanthropy, foundations and endowments, focusing on the opportunities available for ‘everyone to become a philanthropist’. This presentation may be viewed at .

Wednesday, April 20 at 6 p.m.
“Student Philanthropy and the Giving Back Endowment”
Dr. Elise Kieffer, NLS Program Director and Patricia and Robert Long Endowed Faculty Fellow will host a discussion with students who designed and conducted a comprehensive grant making process to distribute Giving Back Endowment funds to area nonprofit organizations while taking NLS 305: Grantmaking and Philanthropic Foundations. Thursday, April 21 at 6 p.m.
Keynote conversation with Dr. Julia Atkins, Florida State University. Atkins is currently serving as the Interim Director of the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. Friday, April 22 at 4:30 p.m.
Donna Herndon Award for Civic Engagement Presentation.
The Nonprofit Resource Center will present the inaugural Donna Herndon Award. The award recognizes a resident of Calloway County who has exhibited a lifetime of civic engagement to others in our community.

Screening of the documentary What is Philanthropy? at the Curris Center Theater.
What is Philanthropy? is a feature length documentary that portrays and discusses the concept of giving within the American context through a critical lens and a variety of perspectives. The Nonprofit Leadership Studies program will host a discussion directly following the screening.
