Career Services is Here to Help!

Career Services professional, paraprofessional and well-trained student staff members are available to give presentations on a wide-variety of topics. Presentation requests should be submitted at least two weeks prior to the date requested. Possible topics include:

  • Job Search Strategies (can be major focused)

Handshake Logo

Handshake is our online job platform that students can utilize to search for full-time and part-time jobs, on-campus jobs, internships, register for career events and career fairs, meet with our office and more!

We would like to extend an invitation to any faculty or staff member that would be interested in accessing Handshake. Faculty and staff can utilize Handshake to post jobs for their department, research companies and job postings, look at career fair attendees and more! An internship integrates practical experience with education in a structured, supervised work environment. Internships are available year-round and typically last one semester. They can be paid or unpaid; for class credit (consult academic or faculty advisor for approval) or not. Contact Career Services with any questions: 270.809.3735.

The benefits of participating in an internship are vast. When you intern, you have the opportunity to do the following:

  1. Enhance your resume and be more marketable for the full-time job search

  2. Build your professional network

  3. Expand understanding about your chosen industry or field

  4. Develop general work functions and workplace etiquette

  5. Gain exposure to organizational culture, latest trends, technologies and practices

  6. Develop transferable skills: communication, time management, report writing, customer service, etc.

The Student Employee of the Month award was established by the Career Services Office in the Fall 2022 semester. The goal of the Student Employee of the Month Program at Murray State University is to recognize members of the Racer community who regularly display the career-focused learning outcomes essential to Kentucky graduates, as outlined by the . These essential skills are consistent with the career-readiness competencies.

In April, during National Student Employment Week, a Student Employee Appreciation Event is held to honor ALL student workers at Murray State!

Caitlin is a Senior Engineering Physics major from Silver Spring, MD. Caitlin works in the Psychology Department, and she was nominated for her professionalism, work ethic, positive attitude, and ability to thrive under pressure.

Haliyah is a Junior Public and Community Health major from Paducah, KY. Haliyah works in the Office of Green Life with Kim Newbern. She was nominated for her dedication, leadership and proactive approach to her duties.

Elle is a Senior Nursing major from Murray, KY. Elle works in the Housing Office and was nominated by Joanne Guns and Taylor Snell for her communication skills, dedication, critical thinking, and involvement with the community. Elle was instrumental in assisting students transition to Station 74 with calmness and empathy.

Ashleigh is a Junior Chemistry major from Murray. Ashleigh works in the Career Services Office and was nominated by Kassia Tucker for her leadership, initiative, professionalism, and helpfulness. Ashleigh recently led a team to help manage and elevate the office's social media marketing efforts.

 
 

Orion Campbell

March 2024 Student Employee of the Month: Orion Campbell

Orion is a Freshman Exercise Science/Pre-Health Professional major from Martin, Tennessee. Orion works in the School of Nursing and Health Professionals and was nominated by Summer Cross and Tammy Wright for his enthusiasm, initiative, willingness to adapt, and communication skills. Orion recently led WPSD-TV on a tour through Mason Hall while they were on campus for the groundbreaking ceremony of the new School of Nursing and Health Professionals building.

Bethanie is a Senior Studio Art major from Gadsden, Tennessee in Crockett County. Bethanie changed her major from Biology, so she still has a year before graduation, but she hopes to work as a Studio Assistant because she enjoys helping people. Bethanie works in the Department of Art & Design. Bethanie was nominated by T. Michael Martin and by Cintia Segovia Figueroa for her motivation, dependability, dedication, and critical thinking.

Austin is a Junior Design Engineering Technology major from Murray, KY. Austin has been working in the Housing Office since his Freshman year and was nominated by two of his supervisors (one direct, and one indirect) for showing initiative, professionalism, and critical thinking skills on the job. Sample Career Services Assignments

Career Services is happy to work hand in hand with faculty to develop career-oriented assignments and tasks for your students. We have put together some of the more popular activities past faculty have used and invite you to take advantage of these pre-made resources. (Note: the 鈥淎udience鈥 section is merely a suggestion and can always be modified).

We are always happy to work with our students - it鈥檚 easiest if we have a heads-up that things like the following will be included on your syllabus. On a related note, consider having us come and speak to your class - We can spend as little as 5 minutes or as long as an entire class session.

Assignment: Career Discovery

Audience: Freshmen, Sophomores, Undeclared Students

Instructions:

  1. Take the on the Major Exploration/Career Direction page (Access Code: racers).
  2. Schedule an appointment with a career counselor at to review your results.
  3. Come in for a consultation to discuss your results.

Career Exploration

Audience: Freshmen, Sophomores, Undeclared Students

Instructions:

  1. Use and to research various careers and paths for their particular major.
  2. Write a small assignment detailing what they were surprised by in their research and if they feel drawn to any particular field of study.

Follow-Up/Assignment Verification: Write-up turned in by student

Resume Review

Audience: Most Undergraduate Students

Instructions:

  1. If students do not have a resume, we recommend referring to our Career Services Handbook to develop a rudimentary version.
  2. If a student does have a resume, they can email it to msu.eresume@murraystate.edu to have it reviewed by one of our staff.

Follow-Up/Assignment: Student can turn in updated/refreshed resume

Handshake Activation

Audience: All Students

Instructions:

  1. Students can log in to (myGate username and password).
  2. Have them complete their profile to 100%.
  3. Education Section (click the pencil next to the name and make sure they have your Major and Start/End Dates filled out).
  4. Fill out their Work Experience (make sure they have a Job title, Employer, Time Period and Location).
  5. Add any Organizations and Extracurricular Activities.
  6. Add multiple skills, documents, courses, and projects.
  7. Add a professional profile picture (Note: students can come to Career Services for a professional headshot).

Follow-Up/Assignment: Students can turn in a PDF or printout of their profile

Mock Interview

Audience: Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate Students

Instructions:

  1. Schedule a mock interview via (Note: interviews can be in-person or virtual).
  2. Fill out the appointment documentation.
  3. Participate in the mock interview and remain receptive to constructive feedback.
